Adoption Guide

Thank you for considering adopting a dog or cat. Please do not hesitate to ask us questions. If you do not live in Tucson (i.e. Phoenix), review the adoption process at the end.

Step 1

Adoption Application and Meet & Greets
To meet one of our adoptable dogs, email us at cherishedtails@yahoo.com or message our Facebook Page for the date and location of our next adoption event and to check if the dog will be there. We typically do not bring cats to adoption events. We do not have a facility and are 100% foster based all across Tucson and the greater Southern Arizona area.

To set up and meet & greet with one of our dogs or cats, please complete an adoption application located on our website (see below). Completed applications will be reviewed in the order that we receive them. We will contact you if we think the animal would be a good fit and is completely ready for adoption. Thank you in advance for your patience since our volunteers and fosters have full time jobs and busy families. There are many wonderful pets, and we will work with you to the best of our ability to help you find “the one.” We do consider trial adoptions as well.

Complete an adoption application found on our website: cherishedtails.weebly.com OR at form.jotform.com/cherishedtails/dog-application  -  form.jotform.com/cherishedtails/cat-application

Step 2 - Home Check
We require a home check as part of our adoption process. A home check is for the well-being and safety of all our rescue pets. The home check will be done either before you take your pet home or during a home meet and greet, which may take a few days to coordinate.

Step 3 - Adoption Fee and Contract
Once you are ready to officially adopt, you will complete adoption paperwork, receive medical records, take an adoption photo, and pay the adoption fee.
Our pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. The adoption fee helps offset the cost of the medical care and typically covers 50% or less of the medical bill. 100% of the adoption fee will go directly back into rescue to help pay for medical and care for all the animals in rescue. Here are the fees:

Pets 10 years of age and over: $125
Pets 1 to 9 years of age: $150
Pets 1 year and younger: $225 **on the rare occasion a rescues is already pregnant
We accept cash, check, and PayPal.

Step 4 - Register the microchip and with your local county
The microchip can be registered for a one time $20 fee at homewardboundpet.com or akcreunite.org.

There are several ways to register for rabies and licensing in Pima County:
1) Through specific vets
2) Email to: licensingpacc@pima.gov
3) Fax to: (520) 791-6627
4) Mail/in person to: Pima Animal Care Center, 4000 N Silverbell Rd, Tucson AZ 85745 http://webcms.pima.gov/cms/one.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=1003
Along with the application form linked below, a copy of the adoption contract, a $19 fee, and the rabies information is required for licensing.

Phoenix and Arizona Adopters (not located in Tucson):
Please fill out an application first. We will contact you if your application has been approved, and will then set up a home check if we can find someone from one of partner rescues in your area. Meet and greets take a few day to coordinate. If you have specific questions, we can schedule a phone call with the foster. Once pre-approved, you may meet and pick-up your new family member. We try to expedite the process, but we are a small group of volunteers.

Outside of Arizona:
We rarely adopt outside of Arizona. We cannot provide transport and require a home check before adoption.
